Yesterday was a stunningly beautiful day. As I sat outside enjoying the glory of cool temperatures and a clear blue sky, I noted to myself the moments of peace, joy, and presence as I gave thanks to God. I knew those moments wouldn’t last for long.
This morning, I woke up to torrential rain and severe weather alerts. It is the kind of rain that causes flash floods and dangerous road conditions. I think back to yesterday’s clear blue skies and realize that yesterday was today’s “good ole days”.
In life, we often become nostalgic for the good ole days. For some, the concept of better days in the past is a romanticisation of past times. For others, looking back to a time of happiness with fondness is simply a remembrance. For these people, a special time of peace, joy, and happiness became for them the benchmark of a good life.
We all have a day or time in life that we look back on as the good life. But it can be hard to recognize that we are living our best day while we are still in the moment. We tend to think that better days will come after we’ve achieved our goals, when we get that new job, when we go on our next trip. When we spend our today rehashing the past or rehearsing the future, the best today becomes yesterday before we realize how good today was.
Today is a gift of God.
King David of the Old Testament understood good days and bad days. His time as king of Israel was checkered with hardship and glory, failure and success. Yet, he wrote “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it” Psalm 118:24.
If, for you, today is all sunshine, clear blue skies, and happiness, savor the beauty of it to hold you through the next storm and be thankful. If today is full of storm clouds and difficulty, be assured that the storm will pass and the sun will shine again.
The God who made the sun and the rain is with you and He loves you. May a beautiful moment in His presence be your benchmark of a good life.
“Taste of His goodness; see how wonderful God truly is. Anyone who puts trust in Him will be blessed and comforted.” Psalm 34:8
