All Things Inevitable

Grapefruit juice in the morning
Prune juice every night
Two eggs a week is the limit
To get my cholesterol right
I drink decaffeinated coffee
My tea is sugar free
I go to bed at 8:30
And nap from noon to three
I take my vitamins faithfully
I don’t drink, smoke, or chew
Yet I have heartburn, asthma, and allergies
And occasionally get the flu
I’ve brushed and flossed since childhood
I take calcium in a pill
After six fillings, four crowns and a root canal
I owe the dentist still
They tell me to aerobicize
And get cardiovascularly fit
But my fallen arches and popped knee joints hurt
To even think of it
I’ve always eaten carrots
Never played the stereo loud
I can’t see the end of my driveway
Or hear conversation in a crowd
The worst thing is my memory
It’s the first to go they say
I’d take a dose of ginseng
But I’ve forgotten where I put it away
I guess I’ll have to face it
As my body ages and decays
Maybe it’s a subtle reminder
That the Lord has numbered my days
In youth I thought I was invincible
Arthritis tells me I was wrong
My bifocals are God’s way of saying
I won’t be on earth for long
Life is but a journey
Though my vehicle needs repair
God has chosen the destination
His power will get me there
No more groans and grumbles
No more moans of misery
One day soon the Great Mechanic
Will restore this broken-down, old me.
